How do I overlay maps in Photoshop?

I am attempting to create a comprehensive map of various archaeological sites in Peru using at least three different scanned maps (in .gif) and a screenshot of terrain from Google maps. I have a MacBook. How do I overlay the maps so that they all line up and are semi-transparent over the Google map base?

(And how do I take a screenshot in Gmaps?)How do I overlay maps in Photoshop?
+++Open your images in Photoshop onto separate layers

鈥iles %26gt; Scripts %26gt; Load files into stack

鈥he order they show in the dialog box is the order they鈥檒l be in the image (top is top layer)

鈥f your images are all the same size, you may want to try checking the Attempt to Auto Align check box

+++Scale -- If your images aren鈥檛 the same size, you鈥檒l need to scale them to match

鈥indow %26gt; Layers to open the Layers Palette

鈥urn off the visibility of all but the bottom 2 layers by clicking the little eyeball icon on the left of the layer.

鈥ower the opacity of the top visible layer by changing the percentage slider at the top right of the Layers Palette

鈥dit %26gt; Transform %26gt; Scale

鈥old the Shift key while pulling out on a corner handle (shift = maintain aspect ratio)

鈥hen the image is up to scale, hit enter

鈥epeat for other layers

+++Blending the images

The method for blending your overlay images will depend upon your images. You may be able to vary the opacity of the layers to see through them. Changing the Modes of the layers may be helpful. Multiply will filter whites and allow Blacks to be visible. Screen will filter blacks and allow whites to be visible. Overlay will blend the colors together.

If Opacity and Modes aren鈥檛 enough, you may have to use Layer Masks. Layer Masks will allow you to hide or reduce the opacity of certain portions of a layer

+++Masks

鈥?Select the layer to be masked

鈥?Layer%26gt;Layer Mask%26gt;Reveal All

鈥?A white thumbnail appears on the top layer of the layers palette and the top image is hidden

鈥?Click on the Mask to make sure it鈥檚 selected and not the image itself

鈥?Choose a soft black brush

鈥?Paint on the canvas (big image) with the black brush

鈥?As you paint, you鈥檒l see the top layer become hidden

鈥?You can vary the opacity of the paint brush to feather the reveal

鈥?You can vary the color (grey) of the brush to feather the reveal

鈥?You can vary the opacity and fill of the layer to blend the reveal
